I love glasses. My eyes are so bad that without them I’d be lost. Of course, I am grateful and blessed with the ability to see, but certainly I would have fallen off a cliff without them by this point in my life. So when I wear glasses, they become a part of me and also a part of my fashion sense and style.

My question is, with the way glasses are so extremely expensive in the countries I’ve been to in Europe and North America, how does glasses’ fashion change so dramatically and rapidly? Are these changes just for the wealthy who can afford to change such an integral and essential tool to everyday life for some weak-eyed individuals as my self? I’m especially interested with the onslaught of the “hipster” or “nerd” glasses fad onslaught that has entirely changed the way we interact with current beauty images and popular glasses shape wearing. But when this crazy dies down (who knows how long it will last) where will the hipster or nerd glasses wearers be unless they can afford new glasses? Fashion changes constantly and clothes are cheaper and more disposable, but with items like glasses, the fashion simply cannot change so fast or else its mass customer population would never be able to keep up. Where will that leave me, someone who’s glasses of 5 years broke at just the right time to buy into the popular style, when a new design comes along and antiquates this one? It’s an age-old problem I’m sure, but a dilemma for fashion conscious dressers nonetheless.
